Elyria Company Gets $100K Grant

November 25, 2008 – Elyria - Through a growing partnership between the University of Akron and Lorain County Community College, the Innovation Fund is giving $325,000 to four regional technology startup companies.

In the latest application round, three companies will receive awards of $100,000 each:

Brainwashed Software of Elyria, which creates medical education software that uses 3D interactive animation technology to teach health professionals and medical students about neurology.

Youngstown-based ERIS Medical Technologies, which develops software which helps with hospital and physician billing.

Thermedx of Solon, which has developed and is on the path of commercializing a novel surgical irrigation device that will help prevent hypothermia in patients prior and during surgery.

In addition, another lcoal company will receive a $25,000 award.

Inkren of Oberlin will use the funds in its development of a Web application that combines a new kind of handwriting recognitiion for practicing and learning Chinese and Japanese characters. The application uses an adaptive learning algorithm to teach students complex languages such as Chinese and Japanese.

The Innovation Fund is supported by a $500,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Development Third Frontier Initiative, with matching support from the University of Akron Research Foundation and the Lorain County Community College Foundation.
